If you're starting a heating company in Alberta, you're entering the most furnace-heavy market in the country. That's good news for demand and hard news for differentiation: almost every household needs what you sell, and almost every household has heard a dozen names already. Your brand and launch plan have to answer one question well: why call the new company?
We help with that marketing side. Licensing and permits are between you and the Alberta authorities linked below.
Alberta's heating market for a newcomer
The headline is simple: natural gas dominates. Statistics Canada reports that in 2023, 76% of Alberta households used natural gas for their primary heat and 14% used electricity. Furnace repair, furnace replacement and maintenance plans are the core of the market.
Population is concentrated in Calgary and Edmonton, with Red Deer, Lethbridge, Airdrie, St. Albert, Strathcona County and Wood Buffalo as other large communities. Each big city behaves like several smaller markets, because customers care about how fast you can arrive, not whether you're "a Calgary company".
Positions that work for a new Alberta company:
- The fast local option for one quadrant or a ring of suburbs.
- The maintenance-first company that builds a base of tune-up customers before chasing replacements.
- A specialist niche, such as hydronic and boiler systems, where fewer competitors focus.
Long winters and the chinook effect
An Alberta furnace can run from September into May. In southern Alberta, chinook winds can bring sudden mid-winter warm spells, which can make call volume swing from frantic to quiet within days.
For launch planning:
- Have your phone handling and missed-call text-back ready before the first deep cold, which is when new customers try unfamiliar names.
- Expect paid search costs to rise sharply during cold snaps, when every competitor raises bids.
- Use warm spells for maintenance and review-request pushes, rather than cutting marketing completely.
Authorities to look up before you open
Confirm your obligations with these bodies directly; we name and link them only.
- Alberta safety codes system: Municipal Affairs' system covering gas, plumbing, electrical, building and pressure equipment, with ABSA handling boilers and pressure vessels. Permits come from accredited municipalities or the Alberta Safety Codes Authority.
- Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training: trade certification. The list of compulsory certification trades is on Tradesecrets.
- WCB-Alberta: workers' compensation.
- Alberta business name registration: done through authorized registry agents.
- Alberta consumer protection: including the prepaid contracting rules, which matter if you take deposits and sell in customers' homes.
Programs your customers will ask about
We found no province-wide Alberta home heating rebate on official sources when we checked in October 2026, and the federal oil-to-heat-pump grant closed to new Alberta applicants on 31 July 2026. The main local option is the Clean Energy Improvement Program, which offers property-tax-based financing for energy upgrades, but only in participating municipalities.
For a new company, that means your marketing shouldn't lean on rebates. Lean on speed, clarity and trust instead, and if you mention CEIP, check the customer's municipality first and tell them to confirm with the program.
How we'd launch a new heating company in Alberta
- Choose a tight service area: one quadrant of Calgary, or Edmonton plus St. Albert, for example.
- Build a brand that's easy to say and remember, because you're competing with familiar names. See naming and brand.
- Put up a fast, plain launch site with furnace repair, replacement and maintenance pages. See launch website.
- Start reviews from your first jobs, since crowded map results reward them.
- Run a capped first-year lead plan with cold-snap budget rules agreed in advance.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a prepaid contractor licence in Alberta?
Possibly. Alberta's Consumer Protection Act sets out when a business that takes payment before finishing work, and sells away from its usual premises, needs a prepaid contractor licence. Read the official publication and check with Alberta's consumer protection office; we don't give legal advice.
Is Alberta too crowded for a new furnace company?
It's competitive, but a long heating season means a lot of repair, maintenance and replacement work. New companies tend to win with a narrow service area, quick response and a clear, likeable brand rather than the lowest price.
Are there Alberta rebates I can advertise?
Not province-wide, as far as official sources showed when we checked in October 2026. The Clean Energy Improvement Program offers financing in participating municipalities only, so check that a customer's town takes part before mentioning it.
