Start your heating company with a real launch plan

Where we work

Starting a heating company on Prince Edward Island

PEI is a small, close-knit market where heat pumps are the most common primary system and oil still heats many homes. A new heating company here lives or dies by reputation, so the launch plan puts trust and reviews ahead of advertising.

On Prince Edward Island, a new heating company is known by name almost from its first week. That's both the risk and the opportunity. Heat pumps are already the primary system in more than a third of homes and oil remains common, so there's steady work in installation, service and conversion. But in a market this connected, one badly handled job travels further than any ad.

We help with the brand and launch marketing. Licensing is between you and PEI's Inspection Services.

PEI's heating market for a newcomer

Heat pumps lead, with oil close behind. According to Statistics Canada, in 2023 heat pumps were the primary heating system for 36% of PEI households, while 28% used oil, 18% electricity and 8% wood as their primary energy.

Opportunities that suit a new company:

  • Heat pump maintenance, because a large installed base needs regular service and repairs.
  • Oil system service and replacement in homes that haven't converted.
  • Backup and hybrid heat, for homeowners who keep a second system for the coldest days.

Charlottetown, Summerside, Stratford, Three Rivers and Cornwall are the main communities. Most of the island is within a reasonable drive, but winter roads and storm weeks still make a compact service area sensible in year one.

Climate and seasonality

PEI's maritime winters are cold and snowy, softened somewhat by the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Expect:

  • Pre-winter heat pump checks and oil furnace tune-ups as your strongest autumn offers.
  • Urgent calls during cold snaps and storms, when heat pumps struggle and backups get tested.
  • A quieter summer, which is the time to schedule installations and build reviews.

Programs your customers will ask about

PEI's programs changed significantly in 2026. As of October 2026, the efficiencyPEI free heat pump program shows as closed, and the province's residential heat pump equipment rebates ended on 15 April 2026, with some purchases made in the prior year still eligible within a year of purchase. A federal agreement announced in June 2026 expands free insulation for income-qualified homeowners.

For a new company, that means customers may arrive expecting rebates that no longer exist. Being the company that explains the change clearly, links to official pages and asks customers to confirm with the province, is a trust advantage.

Why reputation beats reach on the island

In a province this size, a new company's reviews and referrals compound faster than almost anywhere else in Canada. A homeowner in Stratford asks a neighbour, a cousin in Summerside and a local social media group before calling anyone, and your name either comes up or it doesn't.

That changes how you should spend your first year's marketing money. Put more into the things that make referrals easy, such as a clean van with a readable phone number, a simple website a friend can text to someone, and a Google profile with honest recent reviews, and less into broad advertising. Keep a short record of every early customer, with their permission, so you can remind them about seasonal maintenance; repeat work from people who already trust you is the cheapest work a new company will ever win. If you're unsure how to split the budget, the pricing page shows where our plans start.

How we'd launch a new heating company on PEI

  1. Lead with reputation. Make every early job review-worthy and ask for the review the same day. See the local launch service.
  2. Pick a name that sounds local and plain. On PEI, a clever brand matters less than a trustworthy one. See naming and brand.
  3. Build a small launch website with your real story, services and the communities you serve.
  4. Add modest paid search only for your strongest service.

Frequently asked questions

What licences apply to heating companies on PEI?

PEI's Inspection Services covers boilers and pressure vessels, electrical, plumbing and propane, and the province lists licences such as the Mechanical Contractor Licence and the LP Gas Personnel Licence. Check the official pages to see what your business needs.

Can my customers still get efficiencyPEI heat pump rebates?

As of October 2026, the province says the free heat pump program is closed and the residential equipment rebates ended on 15 April 2026, although some earlier purchases may still qualify within a year. Send customers to the official page to check.

Is PEI too small for paid advertising?

Not too small, but small enough that a strong Google profile and reviews do most of the work. Modest, targeted paid search can fill gaps in quieter weeks.
